Europe forked a Russian-based MS Office clone rather than the more international, less controversial LibreOffice. Maybe it wasn’t “Clone” enough? Though that choice has also brought some copyright issues to the development. hmmm…
- LibreOffice = Open Doc Format
- Device not cloud based
- International/US Based
- Colabra Online=Open Doc Format
- Cloud Focused (Great Colab features, but can cause edit conflicts)
- (International)
- Fork of LibreOffice
- LibreOffice Online (LOOL) temporarily stopped development in 2022
- Due to drift LOOL development has restarted in 2026. Probably due to Colabra Online’s drift.
- Arguments with LibreOffice (it’s moving its online fork to the desktop – poor experience)
- Nextcloud uses this – Is it moving towards Euro/Only Office?
- OnlyOffice = MS Doc Format
- Cloud Focused (Great Colab features)
- Russian Based
- EuroOffice=MS Doc Forma
- Cloud Focused
- European Fork of Russian-based OnlyOffice
- Heavily Programed by NextCloud
There is also ThinkFree; though commercial, it most commonly pops up as the MS Office replacement. The rest, overall, are MS Office/365 (Proprietary), Coligra Office, and ConceptDraw Office, Google Workspace/Google Docs Editors, Hancom Office, iWork, MobiSystems OfficeSuite, SoftMaker Office, Thinkfree Office, WordPerfect Office, WPS Office.
There was also: Apache OpenOffice (A stopgap fork of OpenOffice until LibreOffice took off), AppleWorks Applixware Corel Home Office Go-oo Gobe Productive IBM Lotus SmartSuite IBM Lotus Symphony IBM Workplace Managed Client KOffice Microsoft Works NeoOffice OpenOffice.org Siag Office StarOffice
Since I mostly use it for a “Word” replacement, I’ll count: [redacted]; never mind… Ok, I moved to LibreOffice so long ago that I’ve forgotten it.
TEXT ONLY: I must tout JOE, my go-to on Linux. I hate vi, Emacs, and Pico. Joe’s own editor is my favorite text-based editor. It’s terminal-based; thus, it’s not a NOTEPAD replacement. Not just on Unix; it is available on Windows now. It is a clone of star/WordStar, and now it adds Turbo C features with programming assistance. It offers multiple document features via split-screen and tabs. (WikiPedia / Joe’s Own Website)
NOTE: LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice, a fork of StarOffice. Both OpenOffice and LibreOffice are very similar to MS Office, and moving from or between them and MS Office is often easy.
NOTE: All 4 noted above are very similar to MS Office. EuroOffice and OnlyOffice are often described as MS Office clones. All can open and save MS Office docs/formated files. Maybe LibreOffice doesn’t handle the scripts as well?
